The Mystic Paint uses a proprietary pigment chip that gives it the “rainbow” effect. The bad news is that the chip is the same one used in foreign currency for protection against counterfeiting, therefore Ford was allowed to use it only on the Mystic Cobras. In fact, if a Cobra wearing that particular hue is damaged, they have to fly in someone with the paint, repair it, and take back the remainder. The good news is that BASF has released a series of paints called Extreme ColorsTM that follow the “Mystic” look. You can get an idea of what “Rainbow” looks like by checking out the “Project Extreme Cobra” in the April 1997 issue of Mustang Monthly.
